Textile traders have been protesting

Under the GST regime yarn and fibres made from silk, wool, cotton or other vegetable fibres attract 5 per cent tax..New Delhi: Finance minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday ruled out meeting the main demand of the textile traders not to put any tax on fabrics under GST.Textile traders have been protesting against GST in many parts of the country."It is not correct to say that textiles sector was never taxed in independent India. In fact, during 2003-04, the entire textiles sector was subjected to central excise duty," jacquard mattress fabrics Manufacturers said the finance minister. And therefore, the price of fabrics is not likely to go up," he said.

While garments and made up clothings costing less than `1,000 attract either 5 per cent and those exceeding Rs 1,000 attract 12 per cent levy.  "Nil GST on fabrics will break the input tax credit chain and then the garments/made ups manufacturers will not be able to get the credit of tax on previous stages," said finance minister in a written reply to the Parliament. Yarns made of man-made fibre or filament attract 18 per cent GST, while the same is 5 per cent for fabrics. "Generally, the GST rates are equal or lower than the pre-GST tax incidence. Mr Jaitley said that zero GST on fabrics will result in zero rating of imported fabrics, while domestic fabrics will continue to bear the burden of input taxes. Finance minister said the GST rate structure for the textiles sector enables ease of classification and determination of rate. GST council has imposed 5 per cent tax on fabrics.

The group has now a governing

Their approach is not to take centre stage themselves but encourage other women to post their stories.I hate to say that I was proved right when women in the last two decades opted for what they termed a more comfortable way of dressing — read western outfits as opposed to the saree. "If there is a demand, the supply will happen," she says. The themes vary every month from sarees from a specific style, weave, fabric, region, colour, or season. They have managed to keep the interest of the closed group by changing the theme every month and restricting the number of posts to four per month per member. So many of them dress up only to post (pictures of) their sarees and when they get a positive response, it is a huge feel good factor.

This too sends out positive signals to other women. Both work with the premise that every saree has a story and that story is intrinsically entwined with the women sporting it. It is very heartening when they express themselves in both word and image," she says. While the diaspora may not be able to sport it as often as they might want to for various reasons, it is increasingly being seen as a symbol of their cultural confidence.com. "The idea is to promote saree wearing on a daily basis and give some positive strokes to women whose life may not go beyond the main door of their homes. Then, in the last couple of years, there has been a decided shift in the perception of the saree as a comfortable and viable option. But this one trend spotting that I can indulge in with complete honesty and conviction and to provable evidence is the one that promises to sweep India in a big way in the coming years — the trend of women wearing sarees on a day-to-day basis rather than only for ceremonial occasions. I was getting rather fed up of being the singular minority of one in many situations out of the art purview where even women of a "certain age" were squeezing themselves in clothes that should be worn by their granddaughters after starving themselves silly. And after a hiatus of several years, actresses are wearing sarees both on screen and off screen.

"The constant vigil is against any commercial interests creeping into the group and weeding out posts that masquerade as posts. The success of two pages on Facebook that I have been following closely over the last one year is an indication that its outreach is touching lives of Indian women within the country and a vast majority of the Indian diaspora, who often go through angst about their cultural positioning and "Indianness". Sunita feels that the best way to encourage and support the millions of weavers and other artisans is to just wear sarees. Closer home, there is a visible paradigm shift towards the saree as the ultimate power dressing as the higher women go up the corporate ladder, the more likely they are to sport sarees as opposed to westerns. To me it often seems like hoodwinking people and pointing to birds hidden in the trees that none, except you as the trend spotter, can see and by unsaid inference those who can’t, being declared "unarrived". China Stretch knit fabric Factory It was fuelled in no uncertain way by parallel cinema, with the likes of Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil and Deepti Naval sporting handlooms on celluloid and off it, sparking off trends that are still visible in women who grew up in that era and were influenced by it. Of course, there is an academic interest in the weaving techniques and embroideries, but it is the story of the woman in the saree that I find fascinating. In the mid-90s, I had rather regrettably declared in an article in the Times of India that the saree is poised to go the kimono way.

The group has now a governing body to help charter its future course to explore possibilities to help weavers in a more direct manner. We even had a Bollywood theme! The idea is to involve as many women as possible to post their stories and we have worked out a system in place where members are supposed to post in the specific albums for easy reference," says Susmita. "All the effort is worth it when one sees women from different social or educational backgrounds or mofussil towns post their pictures. Now you may call it a case of sour grapes, but of that another time! I still chuckle about a piece written by fellow journalist and author Sonal Kalra about these cake-like structures called gowns and the mindset of women who sport them, the unsuitability of the garment to Indian bodies and looks notwithstanding!Dr Alka Raghuvanshi is an art writer, curator and artist and can be contacted on alkaraghuvanshi@yahoo. As of today, the page has nearly 1,30,000 members and counting. The brains behind Magic of Sarees are two sisters — Suneeta and Susmita Misra — who have a conviction in the saree as a symbol of the Indian woman. The fact is that managing a group that size is not easy and is fraught with its own set of problems, especially as they both work in two time zones as Suneeta lives in the US and Susmita in New Delhi in busy and completely unrelated careers. The fact is that things are changing — just like the designers’ taking to the Banaras textiles in a big way has brought the amazing dexterity of the artisans from the region to the fore, the fact that designers are actually making the effort to design woven textiles will definitely take it further. Of course, personally, it is my fervent desire and wish to see the resurgence of trend of the 70s and 80s where the thinking-women brigade took pride in the Indian handlooms and celebrated it on a day-to-day basis. Six yards and 365 days, with a little over 3,000 members, is a group managed by Sunita Buddhiraja, a writer and poet who posts her photographs from her eclectic and vast collection of sarees with some very interesting write-ups about each saree.

These two pages — Magic of Sarees and Six yards 365 days — go far beyond merely wearing sarees and posting pictures.I hate trend spotting. Many like Laila Tayebji and Jaya Jaitley took it forward to work within the NGO sectors and have now spend lifetimes with artisans — working on designs and finding markets for them. These are women who sustained it and grew with it and helped it grow. The group is putting in place regional chapters to encourage the members to meet outside the virtual world ass well. Some of the stories are so heart-wrenching and poignant that it brings tears and we can only say kudos to their courage in posting it on a public platform," says Suneeta. About time I think too.

This was evident in the first phase

You cannot impose a leader on them.Everyone agrees that the name of the person who has accomplished the virtually impossible feat of forging an electoral tie-up between the Congress and the Left is Surjya Kanta Mishra. The idea has caught the China Flame retardant fabric Manufacturers people’s imagination. People have come to understand that it is possible to get rid of Mamata Banerjee’s government. People are people, workers are workers and farmers are farmers. (The CPI-M came into existence following a split in the Communist Party of India in 1964). Mr Mishra spoke with Parwez Hafeez of a tacit understanding between the Trinamul Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal. What has he done in the past two years It is very clear who is saving Ms Banerjee.

Elected MLAs sit and unanimously elect their leader. Attack on their basic rights, attack on communal harmony and attack on their livelihood. In less than a year, he has strengthened the party organisation and galvanised the cadres. Still you insist that on May 19 Ms Banerjee will become a former chief minister. They are two sides of the same coin. Even those who were against the idea have fallen in line.I know the CPI(M) and Left Front have not projected you as their chief ministerial candidate, but even your detractors agree that your political acumen, stature and popularity make you perfectly suited for the big responsibility. The Prime Minister, who is today talking about Saradha and Narada scams, had promised that action would be taken against the culprits and money would be returned to the duped depositors in the Saradha scam before the 2014 Lok Sabha election. He even accused her of doing politics over the dead victims of the flyover crash by immediately blaming the Left for the tragedy. Your decision to contest the Assembly polls is pathbreaking. So you saw "oppression" as the common bond Yes. You must understand the mood of the people. West Bengal being the advance outpost of democracy, the restoration of democracy was the primary challenge.

The mood of the masses. People are saying you have made history Individuals do not make history, and I am not being modest. He contested Assembly elections in 1957 and 1960. Six months ago, they could not believe it. But you can say that it happened when it was an undivided party. Will you address a joint rally with Sonia Gandhi There are problems at the national level. You mean to say this consolidation of Opposition is not a sudden development, that you have been working on it for quite some time Yes! Not only the CPI(M), but Left Front also launched a series of movements. That practice should not be followed in a parliamentary democracy. The coming together of eternal adversaries Congress and the CPI(M) and all anti-Trinamul Congress (TMC) secular, democratic forces on one platform is certainly an incredible and unprecedented political development in the state. We explained the link between these two because without challenging this co-relationship of forces in West Bengal, the battle all over the country cannot be fought successfully. The momentum generated at the grassroots level forced the political parties to come to an understanding.

The media has also played an important role in creating and promoting this idea. Students, women — everyone was oppressed. It is difficult for national leaders. We advocated the mobilisation of people irrespective of their political affinities who had been the victims of TMC’s tyranny. The CPI(M) and the Congress are persistently alleging that there is a tacit understanding between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Didi, but even today (on April 7) the Prime Minister launched a scathing attack against both Ms Banerjee and the TMC. You must not underestimate the power of people’s will. The TMC has proved a trusted ally of the National Democratic Alliance in Parliament. You must have seen my tweets I said it was not time for petty politics, call the Army because rescue operations should be of top-most priority. Congress leaders, in fact, have publicly rooted for you to become the chief minister.Surjya Kanta Mishra was elected Communist Party of India (Marxist) state secretary in March 2015 when, after suffering back-to-back electoral debacles, the party was in total disarray in West Bengal and its cadres demoralised. We want the independent identity of respective allies to remain intact. This created confidence among the people. He has also been the chief architect of the Left Front-Congress alliance which was considered an impossibility a few months ago. Your comment. There is a determination among the people to fight back, to resist any attack on their right to vote. What is going on between Mr Modi and Ms Banerjee is nothing but shadow boxing.

Then over 100 parties and organisations outside the Left Front launched an effective and powerful mass movement under the umbrella of Bengal Platform of Mass Organisations (BPMO) reaching villages which were inaccessible to us for over five years. What prompted the CPI(M) to extend a hand of friendship to the Congress It was in the last state party conference that the call to oust the TMC to save West Bengal and oust the Bharatiya Janata Party to save India was given. You could not share the stage with Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. Basu was CPI(M) party secretary as well as the Leader of Opposition till 1960.Will the Congress and Left parties be able to transfer their votes to each other And aren’t you worried about friendly fights in nearly 10 Assembly seats I have been asking people to dismantle all barriers and demolish all walls. I asked the Left cadres to assist the administration in rescue and relief work and donate blood.. In Kerala, Congress is the Left’s main opponent and vice-versa. But the process is that the final decision is taken by the legislature party after the election. But that does not bar us from organising a number of joint meetings and joint rallies at the grassroots. on the day of the flyover collapse. Now they are convinced and confident that this government can be thrown out. Sometimes extraordinary situations demand extraordinary decisions. Jyoti Basu used to say that people make history. It is not true. But he said it much after I said it, i.All pre-poll surveys have predicted an emphatic victory for the TMC. So, first the people’s mobilisation at the grassroots took place. And no secular, democratic party, including the Left parties, can dare to defy the people’s aspirations. The secular fabric in the state faces an unprecedented threat and efforts towards communal polarisation by the BJP-TMC nexus have to be thwarted. We gave a call for a people’s alliance, making it clear that there should be no political untouchability. What is the Central Bureau of Investigation, Enforcement Directorate, Securities and Exchange Board of India and other Central agencies doing A natak is going on because the BJP does not want Ms Banerjee to lose this election. Everyone was oppressed.e.

This was evident in the first phase of polling on April 4. I have not witnessed this kind of upsurge in the last 10 years. Even TMC supporters are not safe from their own more powerful party colleagues. So kind of them. They all faced a three-pronged attack. National leaders have their compulsions. What is your source of confidence/optimism It’s the people. No CPI(M) state secretary before you — including Biman Bose and Anil Biswas — has ever contested an election. I have given a clear message to all the partners of the People’s Alliance (Manusher Jot) against the ruling TMC that even two days before the election they should rally around the candidate who is in the best position to defeat a TMC candidate. One of the founders of our party, Muzaffar Ahmed, persuaded Jyoti babu to become party secretary in 1957 when he was already the Leader of Opposition.
